Rampage Troubleshooting Guide Part Four:  Air Filter

1/29/2016

Part four in the no-start troubleshooting guide is to check your air filter.  Before proceeding with step three, be sure to review:
  • Part One:  Initial Start Procedure
  • Part Two:  Engine Flooded
  • Part Three:  Loose Bolts
Is your air filter dirty?  Your air filter must be kept clean and properly oiled to function correctly and allow your engine to get the air it requires to start and run well.

How to clean your air filter:  If your air filter is dirty, the best way to clean it is to remove the foam elements and wash them with dish soap and water.  Be sure to allow the filter to dry completely before re-installing.

How to oil your air filter:  I like to use PJI Foam Filter Oil.  Put your clean and dry INNER filter element in a ziplock back and spray some PJI Oil on the element.  Massage the oil/filters to ensure thorough coverage.  Do not over oil the filter as this will clog the filter and the engine will not be able to pull the required air through the filter.  Some people also like to oil the outer filter element.  I don't oil the outer element but if you do, I suggest oiling the outer element very lightly so that it does not get coated/clogged with dirt.

Now is also a good time to re-check the air filter bolts and ensure they are tight

Additional tips:
  • The new style 25051 air filter is a good filter but if you have the old/pancake style, you may want to upgrade
  • The stock 15411 HPI Baja Air Filter is my number one recommended air filter
  • An air filter cover is highly recommended if you run in dirty conditions

Is your air filter wet?  A wet air filter may not allow enough air to pass through it thus choking off your engine.  If your filter is wet (from running in wet conditions or from washing it), remove the foam elements and allow them to dry dry thoroughly before starting your Rampage.

Proceed to Part Five:  Ignition Coil
